Rainforest in Madagascar

Protect and reforest rainforests

In the north of Madagascar is still tropical rainforest along the Makirovana Mountains. Investigations revealed a very large biodiversity with numerous rare animals and plants. The people of the region traditionally burn the forest to create farming area. The forests used to have time to recover. But today more and more people are starting more and more fires and destroy the forest. The illegal deforestation of coveted exotic woods such as rosewood and palisander threatens the ecosystem. The rainforest disappears and with it a habitat for rare, endangered species that are on the red list.Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world and lies off the east coast of Africa between Mozambique and Mauritius. Because of the seclusion, 80% of the species are endemic on the island, that means, they are nowhere else in the world. Around 4,200 tree species, 1,000 different orchids, rare birds and monkeys such as the lemur live on the unique island. Today, however, 90% of their habitat is destroyed. With the forest the local species disappear forever!

Build up edible forests

In 2015, Naturefund, together with local partners Tsiry and Missouri Botanical Gardens, launched a pilot project: We helped ten farming families convert their land with dynamic Agroforestry to sustainable agriculture. dynamic Agroforestry is an innovative and promising cultivation method that can be used to reforest forest in a short time, while people have significantly higher yields. The success is astonishing: Bananas normally bear fruit after 12 to 18 months. In our plots they started fruiting after 2 months! We now want to help other families in 10 villages switch to dynamic Agroforestry and together reforest the forest. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development has supported the reforestation project of Naturefund since 2015.On average in this project, a tree stores 700 kg of CO2. <link internal-link internal link in current>All projects
