Designing events in a climate-friendly way

When planning events, as always, the motto should be "reduce first, then compensate". However, this often sounds easier than it is to implement. Because where do you start?

Here is a brief overview of the points at which particular attention can be paid to the reduction of greenhouse gases during planning.

1. overnight stays

When selecting hotel and accommodation options, appropriate environmental standards as well as certifications should be taken into account. For example, climate-friendly hotels are recognized as environmentally conscious companies.

2. mobility

How can travel to and from the hotel be managed in the most environmentally friendly way possible? Are there public stops in the immediate vicinity that can be used? All of these questions should be asked during the planning phase of the event. For example, event locations that are easily accessible by public transport and where the principle of "short distances" can be implemented are particularly suitable.

At the same time, the start and end of the event should be timed to coincide with the departure times of public transportation. In this way, even more people can be encouraged to use them. At the same time, it would be a good idea to offer combination tickets that, for example, allow free use of public transportation to and from the event along with the admission ticket. This also creates incentives for the use of public and/or environmentally friendly means of transport.

3 Catering

A lot can be done for climate protection, especially when it comes to catering for participants and visitors. Decisive is not only the choice of food and beverages, but also procurement, production as well as packaging.

In addition, the focus should be on regional products, preferably from ecologically fair cultivation. Offering vegetarian or vegan meals has a clear climate benefit.

4. space

When choosing an event building or room, attention should be paid to energy consumption, use of daylight, and efficient lighting. The use of renewable energy or combined heat and power can also have a positive impact on the climate friendliness of the event.

At the same time, care can be taken during events to heat rooms to a maximum temperature of 20 degrees, as this is considered the optimum room temperature. Air conditioning should also be based on this guideline value.

5. Energy and electricity

When it comes to energy and electricity, modern systems should be chosen, as they are usually more economical than older models. At the same time, different factors such as insulation, heating efficiency, room height, number of people and ventilation influence consumption. The consumption of electricity is also influenced by different factors (lighting, technical equipment, stage).
