Giving employees sustainable gifts

Recognition and appreciation of employees is the be-all and end-all for successful and, above all, long-term collaboration. Studies show: Employees want to experience more appreciation at work.

Lack of appreciation has negative consequences

A lack of appreciation usually results in what employees need the least: Demotivation. If employees don't enjoy their work, their mood drops and they feel unwell. So if appreciation is lacking, it can set off a chain reaction that is not beneficial.

But why is appreciation missing in the first place? The reason is quite simple: employees who work well have become the norm. Often, simply saying "thank you" for job accomplishments is forgotten. Right now at Christmastime, however, there is the perfect opportunity to say "thank you" with a lasting gift.

Tax-free, or taxable?

As of this year, gifts in kind or vouchers for one's own employees are generally tax-free up to an amount of 50 euros including VAT. Pure cash gifts, on the other hand - such as Christmas bonuses - are always taxable, starting at one euro.

Employers often use this type of amount to subsidize gym fees, etc. If this amount has already been reached, no further tax-free benefit is possible.

Sustainable gift ideas

1. fruit and vegetable boxes

How about a subscription or a voucher for a fruit and vegetable box? The boxes come without packaging waste and their contents are mostly from the local area. The transport distances remain low and as a small positive side effect you get to know the seasonal fruit and vegetable calendar better.

2. beeswax wipes

Alternatives to aluminum, plastic and cling film are not only trendy, but also pleasant to use. Fastened with your own body heat, breads and co. can be wrapped easily and quickly in a sustainable way. Available in different colors and patterns, the wipes are an eye-catcher in any fridge or bag and can be used many times.

3. give away shopping vouchers

Shopping vouchers are particularly practical in these days of rising food prices. To make the gift especially sustainable, the voucher can come from an unpackaged store, for example. The concept of "unpackaged and plastic-free" now exists in many cities and saves a lot of packaging waste.

4. give away nature conservation

How about gifting your employees a tree planting or a piece of land for conservation? This form of gift is not only particularly sustainable, but can also score points in terms of its impact on climate protection. By the way, as a donation, the gift can be tax-deductible each year with the donation receipt.
