Just under a third of the greenhouse gases produced in Germany come from 30 companies alone. These mainly include large energy companies and companies from the automotive and steel industries. In order to achieve Germany's climate goal of being as greenhouse gas neutral as possible in 2050, more companies must strive for climate neutrality.

What does climate neutrality mean?

Companies or products are labeled as climate-neutral if they do not cause any greenhouse gases that are harmful to the climate or if the emissions caused are compensated for by offset projects.

Why should companies strive for climate neutrality?

1. climate-neutral companies popular with end and business customers

Many companies have already committed to reducing greenhouse gases. Within the Race-to-Zero campaign, 509 cities, 23 regions, 2,162 companies, 127 investors and 571 universities out of 120 have already set the goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050.

2. employees look for sustainable companies

Already 60% of employees in Germany look for sustainable and committed companies when choosing their next employer. The future generations "Y" and "Z" in particular pay attention to sustainability and climate protection.

In addition, commitment to climate protection is seen as a point of high identification potential for existing employees.

3. increasing profits and reducing costs

The switch to climate neutrality can be an investment-intensive decision in the first instance, but it can pay off in the long term and ultimately reduce costs and thus increase profits.

Straight one regarding the Federal Environment Agency should invest in the focus, because clear is today already not invest becomes in the future still more expensive. For example, the damage to German prosperity caused by each additional ton of emitted CO₂ is already estimated at €201, and the trend is upward.

4. climate protection regulations will become increasingly important in the future.

As early as 2021, the amendment to the Climate Protection Act tightened climate protection requirements and enshrined the goal of greenhouse gas neutrality by 2045. Thus, emissions are to be reduced by 65% by 2030 compared to 1990. In the long term, Germany is to become largely greenhouse gas neutral by 2050.

How does a company become climate neutral?

The first step should always be to reduce greenhouse gases, because pure compensation solutions are implausible. In particular, a goal with a defined date should be in the foreground in order to make the entire concept of climate neutrality credible.

Therefore, first steps should be taken within the company with regard to the reduction of greenhouse gases, such as making events or vehicle fleets climate-friendly. The second step should be the compensation of the unavoidable greenhouse gases.

Compensate now with the Blue Planet Certificate and strive for climate neutrality with your company.
