Our project: Hamberger Moor

The Hamberger Moor is located north of Bremen and, together with the Niedersandhausener Moor, the Günnemoor and Önersmoor as a biotope network, is one of four sub-areas of the Teufelsmoor.

Unique nature reserve

Together they form a unique nature reserve with many rare animal and plant species. The Hamberger Moor is also part of the even larger EU bird sanctuary "Hammerniederung" and is thus one of the most important breeding areas in Lower Saxony for bird communities of open and semi-open wet meadows.

The Hamberger Moor is a raised bog which has been drained by ditches since the 18th century in order to open up further settlement and agricultural areas for the population. Last but not least, the development also served for the extraction of peat, which strongly changed the landscape.

Renaturation into an intact moor landscape

Together with NABU Hambergen and the Lower Nature Conservation Authority Osterholz-Scharmbeck, Naturefund purchased moorland from agricultural use in 2017 and is slowly returning it to an intact moorland landscape through various maintenance measures - above all "debris removal", i.e. cutting away young woody plants and birch trees.

By clearing and exposing the overgrown areas and at the same time rewetting, the original mire vegetation, especially the sphagnum moss, is given light to grow again. This allows it to spread further and become permanently established. The CO₂-storing capacity provided by the mire is restored.

Thus, over the years, due to the renaturalized area, the biodiversity of the bog is increasingly returning: plants such as cotton grass, cranberry, heather and sundew and animals such as the adder, bog frog and various dragonfly species, such as the high bog mosaic dragonfly (Aeshna subarctica) and the high bog blue butterfly (Plebejus optilete), are finding their way back into their habitat.

Our vision

The goal of Naturfund is to acquire up to 200,000 m2 with the help of the Blue Planet Certificate and to permanently renaturalize it into an intact moor landscape. Help us to achieve this goal and become our climate partner!
